IPhone 10 Years: Back to the History of the Mobile Phone Reinvention by Apple

HISTORY - Just 10 years ago, Steve Jobs presented the first iPhone. With him was opening the era of smartphones, a technological object become indispensable in our daily life.

On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs revealed the iPhone to the world at a conference at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, US. A phone at once full touch but also smart. Never seen! The era of smartphones was open, and all other models of mobile phones, from Nokia to Samsung via BlackBerry, sent back to prehistory.

For the anecdote, the model used on stage by Apple boss was not operational. The bugs were numerous and no one in the media understood the madness surrounding the product. It will eventually be marketed in the United States from June 29, 2007, being immediately named "invention of the year" by Time magazine.

Like most Apple inventions, it is not a vision but a commercial calculation that launched iPhone history. In 2005, the iPod had surpassed the Mac becoming the largest source of Apple's revenue, but who saved the brand was faced with an increasingly precise threat: the mobile phone. In the mid-2000s, almost everyone had one.

The day when one of his competitors would be able to make broadcast music in a simple and playful way, "the iPod could become useless", worried Apple boss before its director’s board. Fortunately for the brand, the majority of mobile phones on the market in the mid-2000s was far from realizing that.

Apple kills stylus by inventing touch screens

The most basic ones did little more than make calls, and more features were added, more complex the device became to use. It had to pass through countless screens and menus. And for good reason: the mobile phones of the time did not have a good input method. Most had physical keys, which were unbearable to navigate the interface.

There were many phones with “touch screen”. However, they did not know how to detect the impact of fingers. You had to use a stylus, and have two free hands: one to hold the phone, the other hold the stylus. Apple teams quickly realized that the simplest way to overcome this defect was to invent touch screen can detect fingers, a technology still in its infancy at that time.

Surf the Internet more smoothly

The very first iPhone model used a modest 2G connection, offering 16GB storage space and a 2 megapixel camera. It did not even have applications shops, its famous AppStore, which will be launched the following year. But at the time, all that interested people, beyond the ultra-modern gadget aspect conveyed by Apple, was the experience of the web that offered the phone. It finally allowed its user to surf the Internet more smoothly.

One billion iPhones sold worldwide

On July 28, the Apple brand announced the sale of its billionth iPhone. Today, it represents nearly two thirds of the company's turnover. The year that begins is particularly important for Apple. The Apple brand will have to prove that it is still able to upset the phone industry, while its turnover declined in 2016 for the first time in ten years.
